Teardown and Rebuild

Nath, good thing you're picky, cause it makes me pickier. Plus, I was showing it to a friend and the first thing she said was, I quote, "ewwww what's that thing on top? Is that going to stay there? That big metal thing..."
For a good 30 seconds I couldn't figure out what she was talking about- I though maybe she meant my gas cap, or maybe my radiator. Then I go' "oohhh that's the gas tank. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's staying there."
So, another round of color testing. I'm getting close I think. I'm sure now it would be worth the effort to color match the powdercoating on the frame. Add some sort of graphics on top, throw in some of that cool tech spec grippy stuff and cut out holes for venting to the radiator and it should look grood.
I also got the CBR 600RR coil's in. You can see the original on the left and the modded ones on the right. Chopped the sleeve from the VTR's and wired in the plugs. I'm just adding to the things that can go wrong when I try to start it up

Dremel and sanding block to clean it up. Took 15 minutes from start to finish... I just cut about 1 cm off of the tip.

check these links below to see how they have dealt with the tail section. If you google "superhawk pics" and choose images, there is a yellow/white tail section. You might like yellow with white wide stripe like hawkrider continuing onto the tank(yellow with white or silver stripes).

Actually, the last image with the tank and tail in gunmetal looks damned good... I'd say take that, and add a yellow stripe over the tank and tail/cowl and you got yourself a winner...

well guys, i just read this thread from the beginning for the 1st time, the bike looks great, I am about to go through alot of the same stuff, gotta switch out frames on my SH. Driving out to Cali. to pick up a frame from jeepingoose, then I'm going to run up and buy that '98 SH from Anto, so I'll have 1 to ride while I'm rebuilding my '02. I doubt if I go through as much as 7moore7, just wanting to clean up as I take it back to factory specs. I loved reading the thread gave me a lil insite as to what I'm up against, most important will prolly be the tool to remove the swingarm castle nuts, but I'm guessing I can make it, just might take a cpl. tries, lol. otherwise great job on your project, hope mine looks half as clean as yours is turning out

Offroad rider- This forum supported all of my questions and gave me plenty of inspiration so stick around and have fun with it.
No recent updates because I've been prepping for the paint which is just damn time consuming. I think I'm 40 hours in with just sanding/bondo/primer and minor plastic repairs. I've created a hard line on the top of the tank to bring out some of the cool shapes that the shawk has. Process pics:
Got the shock, took a pic for a before/after, and got so excited to put it on that I forgot to take an after of the cleaning process. I'll probably get this sprung for my weight at some point and learn how to fine tune my suspension, but for now I'm putting a bike together and it's grounded!
Painting is just around the corner, lots of electrical left and a couple of light mounting issues but hopefully I'l be firing it up soon!

This is the owners manual and mounting instructions, it is well worth you time to read them both.

Thanks 8451Hawk- I've already found the site in an effort for mounting instructions as to not mess it up. I'll eventually sit down and make an effort to set up the suspension properly. I may even take one of those half day classes b/c there is a lot of information to keep track of. Maybe not, I can probably figure it out with some focus. Right now I'm just excited to get two wheels on the ground again and want to get that motor fired up as soon as possible....

Go talk to Ted Rich at: http://www.aztrackday.com
I went to one of the $30 suspension setup days and also have just sat around his shop talking to him. Good guy, lots of info there.

There seems to be such an art to suspension that this may be the best way to go. All I know is that the darn thing actually compresses now!
Been setting up carbs, working with a friend of a friend type of thing on paint (I don't have the setup to do anything more than rattle can jobs...)
Wiring is almost complete... Just have to figure out how to plug this dern projector in. Carbs are in. Airbox is in. Hoses are 85% figured out... this should get real fun real soon!
Lens coating was shot anyway, so I cleaned this up and put a sealer on it:
Stuck some LED's from a clear alternatives as well so I can get the turn signals

Purdy!
Waiting on the tank still... gotta fill the fluids then I think that I'm ready to test fire this thing!
Is there anything I need to know when starting it after all of this hassle? I haven't wired in the headlights or taillights yet, but I'm pretty sure I can at least get it idling and make sure I don't have any huge changes to make. Possibly try my hand at synching the carbs too...

Thanks Man!
Big news- I can't really take pictures of it, but I fired the sucker up today! I just poured gas down the fuel hoses cause I couldn't wait any longer.
Plus: Electrical all seems to be working. F4i Gauges all lit up, although I ran to the hardware store an came back to fire it again and they were nonexistant... so gotta go chase that ghost problem down.
Fluids all filled, I have a small coolant leak on the thermostat, I think it's just a bad gasket, so will have to get on fixing that.
The big troubleshoot, though, will be that the front cylinder is not firing. I'm almost positive of this as the header is touchable, while the rear one is smoking from the silicon spray I put on it (as the directions said that it would) I swapped plugs to no avail. Gonna take a brake, but may try swapping coils next? That and the gauges. But nothing exploded! It was a relief to hear it purring again...

saw a BMW R1100S by my house today, same colors you have chosen. Looks pretty rad both sitting and going down the road. Check it out:

Nath- cool spotter man! I was looking through some pics and thats a stock color for that BMW.
Thanks for the motivation- I still have a few hours to go before it's ready, and time seems to be scarce these days, but am ready to get this thing out and take some pics so I can ride some dirt onto her!

Teasing myself. Remember, there are no motor heads underneath as my valves are getting cleaned, but this is where it's headed. I also have to actually mount the stuff rather than set it on top haha!

Glad to see you still on it. I took some time off to get into Technical deep diving and the starting of cave diving.
Just got my bike up and on the road again today. Just never liked the way the rc51 sp2 swingarm lined up. seemed to be a bit off to the right. I didnt find enough room even with turning down spacers to make it right. Had all the linkage and stuff dialed in but wasn't satisfied.
Put the stock rear on and am gonna ride it for awhile before I decide what direction I'd like to take next. The CBR1000 front end works killer, as well as the new Scotts damper etc.
Still havn't painted her. Might just do that in the not to distant future.
Again......Your bike looks awsome. Congrats!!

Whoop!
Ok, so these guys are all cleaned up, new valve seals cleaned surfaces, etc. The were all good, nothing needed to be re-ground. Which is good, but bad- I'm still not too sure what was/is causing the low compression in the front cylinder. I'm hoping this did the trick, but it would be a huge bummer if there is an issue with the cylinder rings or something. I'm tentative about bolting these back on in case I need to do more....
#173
well it seems like if it was using oil or you can see some evidence of blow by, you might otta slap some new rings in there since you're down that far. Then when you get down that far, you might otta balance the crank and install some new bearings.
#174
There's a possibility of bad rings or maybe a couple other things- wet compression test said otherwise, but you never know...
I'm going to go with the original diagnosis; valves seating poorly causing low compression. It still seems like this was at least part of the issue, and may be the whole thing. There were signs of a bad gasket as well, although, again, I'm not positive on this. The motor didn't eat oil so not too sure about rings... maybe I'm just talking myself out of getting into the motor more... this could be a project for later and I could try to get this damn thing road worthy!
Wiped the pisons off via 8541Hawk's advice- worked way better than I'd envisioned:
Going to try to bolt the rest together tomorrow and get it running. Crossin my fingers!

Naked Superhawk
Just read the whole thread for the first time.
Man, you're doing an awesome job with this bike.
Great color choices, nice work all around.
Remember that you can turn the thermostat housing top 180 to make it point to the rear, if you haven't already done that.
Nice cut outs in the tail section. After I built mine I learned that the easy way to hold the mesh in pace is double stick tape. I used hot glue originally but it works nowhere near as well as the tape. Check the front frame covers on my CB-1.5, that mesh is held in by tape.
It doesn't look like you need any help but if you have any questions regarding the cooling system, don't hesitate to ask.
Again, great job, can't wait to see it finished.

Well, the thing is, as far as I can tell, I have to remove the motor to do this- it's a mental thing at this point... I'm supposed to be rebuilding!

Houston....
We have full compression.
I am so dang excited that I won't use an exclamation point in any part of this post. The sucker just purred... no complaints anywhere. Front exhaust wrap was smoking (as the silicon gets baked- will only do this for the first 30 minutes or so of riding if it's supposed to) Rode it around for 10 minutes to warm it up, did the test and it's at like 162. Couldn't ask for more from it right now... I was already getting worried from how things were leading up to it.
Thanks for the help everyone- many contributors to diagnosing the issue. I still need to make a headlight/fairing mount and several boring but time consuming things, but the rebuild is back on track

It is pretty easy to miss something, but this thing is put together way better than it was before. Mostly because I didn't know much, I used the shop manual for most of the rebuild to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Well, it's by no means done yet- but yeah, I'mg going to run through all the bolts and hoses and such. I am having some weird stuff going on with the two ports on the underside of the fuel tank that I think are supposed to have vent hoses on them... That's next on the list...

What's the "forty two" signature about anyway?
