newbie to superhawks

hello all my name is cain . 99% sure im going to pick up a 98 hawk with leo vinci pipes otherwise stock with 31k miles. i mostly ride twisties at deals gap and such . ive owned just about everything but my speed triple and rc 51 have been my fav bikes . money is tight so i found this hawk for 2500 and thought about picking it up . im not real concerned for the miles (honda baby) i was wondering if there is anything model specific on the hawks that was something to check out when i go look at it, outside of fork seals ,bearings and such? the guy that has it doesnt know the last time the valves were checked and that kind of concerns me. i plan on fightering it . possibly some kind of fork swap , ill have to read up on what bolts up. i will post up pics when i get it. thanks for any replies

Listen for misfires, clacking valve buckets, worn cam chain tensioners and piston slap.
For $5.00 I will give you the mp3 of these exact sounds for reference. JK

Seriously, the only two common issues on the SH are the CCTs and the rectifier. You'll find lots of info on both here on the forum (go ahead and change them out to give yourself peace of mind...). Other than that, have yourself a ball! Welcome!!

so all the basic stuff that you already know about and two major things are Cam chain tensioners and Voltage regulator. both have plenty of material here, just do a quick search

Edit: OK--- looks like you already got the answer, i should refresh more often

We just did the valves on mine last month. I was amazed how much quieter the valve train was after doing it.

Tell you what. back in Feb. I bought a 98 SH and it cam with Leo Vince pipes and man does it sound mean. I have heard Yoshi, 3 Brothers, so on and so on put on SH and to me by far the Leo's sounds the best. They are deep and throaty and can be heard for miles. I get alot of complements on the bike's looks and sound.

Like I said I bought my with 27k on it and is now at 29.5k. Sounded great when I bought her with no engine noise. 2.5k later the CCT's are going bad and I need to do a valve adjustment. I take real good care of my bikes and baby them, unless some squid on a Katana wants to play, and these are starting to go. It's a crapshoot and you can only do so much just listening to it. Like everyone else has said, if it sounds good buy it and replace the problem areas right away and just hope for the best.

Good Luck w/ the SH I know you will enjoy it.

Do the CCT and the voltage regulator problems pretty much apply to Hondas across the sportbike spectrum, or not?

Kind of.. I know some of the CBR F3's had CCT issues. Other bikes, like VFRs have CCTs that get "noisy" but don't cause problems (making me think that they fail but even failed there isn't enough slack to skip a tooth)..

As for R/R issues, yes.. most honda bikes up till sometime around 2001 or 2002 had the same crappy R/R.

Hi,
Welcome Grasshoppa, me too am new to the SH game, just got mine either, a red 98 with 36k miles, all original.
It´s my second one, but the first was a junkyard bike that never rode.
Boy am I happy with this new one!
I thinking of doing a Cafe Racer with it, already started to customize the exhaust.
Attached a picture of how it should look like when ready.

Greetings to all forum members.

By the way, I am from São Paulo, Brazil.
