New SH Owner
About a week ago I purchased a couple of bikes from a friend. A 98 Superhawk and a 00 RC51. Both bikes have been sitting for a few years, but the VTR was supposed to have been running before it sat. The RC51 was laid down and needs some body work and a few other things.
I found the forum while doing some research on the VTR and joined up so I could dig into the old posts and pics. So far it has been a great resource! Thought I would say hello and Merry Christmas!
I am currently working on getting the VTR running. So far I have:
I was not able to find new plugs for it locally so I have ordered them (and the OEM plug tool) online...hope to get them soon.
It fired up when I first started working on it by putting some gas in the carbs. Since doing the other work it started once and ran for a few seconds, but now it just won't fire. I expect I'll have to keep working through it a part at a time, but anyone familiar with getting a bike running after sitting for 3 years...I'm open to advice!

I am currently working on getting the VTR running. So far I have:
- Put a new battery in it.
- Changed the oil and filter.
- Changed the coolant.
- Cleaned up the fuel tank and fixed the petcock (was stuck).
- Pulled and cleaned up the carbs.

the 1st thing to check is the fuel petcock and make sure that the vac line is on the correct nipple.a lot of people put it on the wrong one.this will cause it to barely run or not at all.hope this helps.

welcome to the fun and happy holidays as well! do a compression test, make sure its ok, the plugs will help most likely but be nice to the new battery, the petcock is a huge issue so make sure thats all clean and working properly, there is an entire repair manual on here that you can download as well, search for it i dont have the link off hand!
welcome and PICTURES of both the bikes man!

I've got the Honda shop manual for it, which has been very helpful so far. I don't have a plug wrench that will fit in to the head to get the plugs out, so until my order shows up I'm kind of on hold.
It is odd though, every now and then I go out and flip on the ignition and hit the button to see what it will do and it pops a bit like it would want to start and then just turns over with no action...can't wait for the plugs and wrench to show up so I can get back to working on it! I'm itching to ride it.
As for pics...the SH is stripped down for working on and the RC is even more naked. As I get them put together I'll post up some pics.

Welcome to the site and congrats on the bike purchase. It could also be gummed up carburetor jets from fuel sitting in there. Check the other suggestions and that should get you headed in the right direction. Good luck with it.

Welcome and Merry Christmas.
+1 on cleaning the carbs. After sitting for even a few months, a complete teardown and cleaning is a must. The slow/pilot jets are guaranteed to be plugged.
Also check all fuel and vacuum hoses for cracks or "sponginess". And the tire rubber may be dried out and hardened to the point of being dangerous.
Then there's the obvious...Did you drain the old gas out of the tank and carbs? It's no good after several years sitting in Florida heat.

Thank you for the welcome everyone! I'll start a post in the tech forum as I'm still having trouble getting it running.
For reference, I've seen a lot of information here on PVLIR. It is definitely not that! I even tested the vacuum on the line and when pulling the tank today there was fuel in the lines.
