New GSXR calipers finally installed

Just wanted to post about my new brakes. Big thanks to Nuhawk for coming through on these. I finally got around to installing them on the old hawk. Feels a lot better from the old stock ones. I may still do the master cylinder upgrade, but for now this is an improvement for me.

Now to just find a F3/vfr front wheel and I can do the wheel swap.

What lower faring do you have? Calipers look good too.

The stock lines on the GSXR are like that, they jump from the right to left instead of having a tee. If you put on SS lines it will feel even better and you can eliminate the jump over.

Damn, I saw the post and thought you were selling them!!!!! I'll keep looking. your bike looks great those pipes really set it all off. I'd go with s/s lines and get rid of that jumper line

Good job! I got your pm and the pictures look good. Glad this worked out for everybody. I almost have all the pieces to put mine together now. I really wasn't sure we would ever see those calipers from Canada. Now I'm glad we finally got them - it was worth the wait!

Nope, you're only the 1/4 way done. Just image if you have the correct M/C and SS lines and ebc hh pads!

Just DO IT!

Warning: If you do, it's best to run very sticky front wheel rubber. <grin>

Based on other previous posts, I think I'm going to take a wait and see on the master cylinder. I agree that the pads and the lines are a must do. Bling, I do have a question regarding these. When I cleaned the calipers pictured in this post they acted like they were anodized. When I got around to mounting mine on my bike I used the same solvents but my rubber gloves were coated with yellow paint goo. Afterwards they did not have the shine like the ones here. They are just a dull yellow. Ideas?

No, I'd say the m/c would be a must do and the pads/lines second. Start with a matched system and then mod from there is my advice.

Sorry, no idea on the residue question. Incompatibility issue I guess or maybe a powdercoat issue.

This is the thread upon which I based by comments. No need for stopping power today in Texas! NASTY - 40F and pouring! I certainly don not diminish what Bling is saying but for me it was all about bang for the buck and shop time. He is also right that matching geometry is best.

I thought CE's install and testing provided a good basis for install. He had the luxury of the option because he bought the whole thing. I only had calipers and the bike came with aftermarket lines. It's not whether or not I'll do the MC when I find one - I probably will. I just wanted to know that the mod was an improvement and was safe to operate in the meantime.

Only clean the calipers with soap and water. I used simple green to get mine cleaned up after buying them, but that's with the pads not installed. Seems simple green kills brake pads. I've had to throw away 2 or 3 sets of HH pads due to them not working anymore- I think the cleaner soaked in. I even pulled the pads out and sanded them down- no help.

Also, with new rotors, the directions state you HAVE to use new pads. Just in case anyone is thinking about trying to save $60 after spending $600 on rotors...

Thanks, Zimm! The only thing that I could think of is that somebody tried to freshen up the look of these calipers with a rattle can. Shmittay's calipers responded wonderfully to the clean up. Mine got all gooey. There is a post on the forum about this from TxSuperChicken - rather informative stuff. I use Simply Green in my shop and a super degreaser called Super Purple or something like that. It's REALLY strong. Make sure you use gloves or you will be later 'cause all your skin is gone! I also use Mother's Wheel Cleaner but follow the directions on the can. I think this is what softened and dissolved the paint on mine. Calipers and rotors both used in my case and I think Kris' too. Although that's nice to know. This must not be the case in the reverse order though. New calipers are fine with existing rotors?

Yes you can use new calipers and pads with old rotors- no problem. You can take some scotchbrite (green scrubbie pads) or very fine sandpaper and scuff up the rotors a little bit to knock off any glaze (highly polished glossy looking rotors) so the new pads will have fresh steel to bite into and bed in.

If your calipers are really nasty, eastwood catalog has brake caliper paint kits that a bit pricey, but might be a neat project.

http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/s...=caliper,paint

If you do go that route, take some photos and make a little "how to" if it comes out looking good.

Beware: superpurple (for sure) and simple green (occasionally) can screw up bare aluminum.

dang, I forget to check my thread and there are lots of replies haha. So bling, you suggest doing the master cylinder before lines and pads eh? Interesting, I will keep that in mind then. Quick question for you guys that have done this. How did you mount that jumper line in the mean time before you switched over to the ss lines? Luckily my jumper still have the rubber grommets on it so I could kind of "wedge" them onto the fender and they will stay but it seems sort of ghetto haha.

just a question after looking at these pics do the pads contact the whole rotor or is there uneven rotor wear specificaly on the bottom edge of the rotor? also if you have stock fork springs will the brakes make the forks feel soft when braking? thanks in advance,Neil

I didn't run the stock gixxer lines because I had taller VFR bars at the time and later went to a full fledged superbike handlebar setup. The stock gixxers look too short even for stock bars but I guess not?

Neil,

See my original thread about the pads issue:
https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...read.php?t=380

Sorry, never ran the stock springs in either the VTR or CBRF4i forks with these brakes.

The gsxr lines will work but it could be 1/4" longer. I will probably do the lines pretty soon.
