My Aluminium Panniers project

Recently, I went to the Burt Munro Challenge rally. On the way home, I slightly melted the bottom of my RH Teknic saddlebag. I have always worried about this happening, and decided, after I got home, to make an aluminium set. So far, I've done some cardboard mockups to develop the patterns, and I think I'm at where I can start making them.
They won't be big enough to fit helmets- my topbox is for that, and I will want a quick detach system. But they should match the capacity of the saddlebags, while having a bit more security.
I am also trying to achieve this while keeping the whole package as narrow as possible. I think she's going to end up about 900mm wide (35")
Pics of mockup to follow.

Damn, that's a lot of luggage. I tend to avoid rides on the superhawk that require that much packing

what will be the position of the door opening for these? Looks intriguing so far.

seems like a lot of work just to avoid the turn signals. why not get an integrated taillight, or put lights on the back of the cases?

a little trailer would have been a better option

to be honest i dont think id want to take the sh on a long enough trip to take all the things that fit in there with me, at that point it becomes more like taking a car somewhere without protection from the elements. im more of a purist, if i cant fit it into my back pack and tank bag i dont need it for a bit road trip

Is it me, or would that design create some lift with the way wind hits it?

I'm more intriqued at how he got the girl out there with an umbrella and her jammies on... How in the world did you manage that?! And more importantly what did it cost you?

I have to agree. Its a great concept & attack on it but I am against such measures to avoid a turn signal. Good thing the umbrella wasn't left laying across the seat or you'd have to build around that. I still like my e21's for waterproof pop-off side cases

No, thats my daughter .
She went with me to the rally. And wants to ride motorbikes...

Try taking a teenage girl with you

More than I want to think about

Looking at top opening, but side opening would allow the use of the extra width at the bottom.

seems like a lot of work just to avoid the turn signals. why not get an integrated taillight, or put lights on the back of the cases?
One is cost: I can get scrap aluminium for this for not very much. Indicators, on the other hand...
Two: I can strip the boxes off and ride solo, without having to do anything else..

Is it me, or would that design create some lift with the way wind hits it?
Maybe... It is the minimum required to clear the pillions legs. Furthermore, most of it is behind the riders legs

Oh yeah, Kieran you musta been really mad about the melted bag to attempt such a project.
Not really- its usable, hasn't melted right through, and nothing inside was damaged, but if it happens once, it'll happen again. More likely worse next time. Anything but a complete re-think is just patching a bad situation.
Besides, I'm a sheety by trade.
And I suffer from Compulsive Building Syndrome.

Heh... Yeah, telling a teenage girl to pack light is an exercise in futility... And usually it gets worse when they grow up...

Actually, with the big flat area, that slight angle won't create any noticable lift... But it will help reduce drag somewhat, so I'd say it's about right...

Um... Kieran, have alook at your answer for the melted bag, and apply it to your own thinking about the signals... Then laugh your *** off...

Seriously, having a set of signals on the bags with easily detachable leads (which it seems you are already doing on the topbox) wouldn't add that much cost that it becomes a deal breaker... You get more usable volume as well... Plus you simplify the welding greatly...

Thanks for taking my comment with a smile.
I do have to agree though with the turnsignal comments. Either incorporate them into the bags or just relocate them. There'll come a time when you're packing that you'll wish you had that bit of space available. It looks like it would accommodate a make up bag perfectly......

Well. I got pulled up by a policeman who gave me a ticket for my rear tyre being out of warrantable spec. I have 14 days from yesterday to get a warrantable tyre on to get off the ticket free. went to the bike shop and spent all my aluminium money

I'll have a rethink about the indicators.

I'll get back onto it after the christmas break when the money is coming back in

It looks like it would accommodate a make up bag perfectly......
NO! NO! Bad boy!

Wait, as in it was too worn down? I was unaware of this...

I wonder if they can do that for cars as well?

Motorcycle laws confuse me- in AZ there is no helmet law, you don't even need turn signals if your bike was made before 2007, but splitting lanes is not allowed...

In New Zealand, to get a Warrant of Fitness, among other things, your tyres have to have at least 1.6mm tread left. If the tyre has wear indicators, they measure from them.

Mine had 2.0mm from the bottom of the tread in the middle. But only 1.5mm from the indicator

Splitting hairs, anyone?
