Just got a new KLR 650
Anyone else have a dual sport? I never thought I would ride a dual sport, but I finally talked my girlfriend into getting a bike and she really liked a used KLR 650 she saw on Craigslist ('06). She also said that she had some cool weekends lined up for us up in the mountains. (WOO HOO) Anyway I had to get something better than hers - so I got a brand new one.

Nice bike, I was actually in the market for a dual sport before I bought my hawk but only had enough cash for one of them. KLR's are a good solid bike. I have an old Honda XL500 in the garage i'm trying to restore for street use. Go to advrider.com, great dual sport community.

I have a DR650 and a KTM620, 2 different animals, but both fun to ride. Are you on SDAR yet (San Diego Adventure Riders) http://www.dualsport-sd.com ?

The ride is excellent, not the most powerful thing in the world, but the handling is SUPERB! I am amazed at how you can just throw this thing into the corners with no problems. (ie VERY flickable) I have to take it into the dealer for the 600 mile "safety inspection" which sounds an awful lot like "really expensive oil change" But anyway so far so good and to any one looking into a KLR I give it a 9 out of 10 (the seat is a joke) and highly recommend it.
Happy Trails!

Well, so far so good, I just clocked 600 miles and no problems yet. The main complaint so far is the seat, I will probably get a Rick Mayer or a Corbin.

Now it wears pretty extreme Pirelli dualsport tires, and does duty mostly on unpaved roads and 4WD roads. A little big/heavy for singletrack. But I can ride to the roads, instead of trailering.
Deciding whether to get a Rick Mayer seat or a Corbin is like deciding whether to get a Lexus or a Yugo. Some people like their Corbins, everybody likes their Mayer (or Russell) seat.
If you're only going to be doing pavement, the Russell is the top of the line (in spite of the caption, I think this is a dual.)

There are things in between. Sargent makes one:

This looks promising, for cheap:

One of the huge advantages for a KLR650 is a large online community of KLR650 riders and a very large aftermarket. People have ridden these guys around the world.

Transalp if I'm not mistaken. 88-91 or so if memory serves.
I have an XR400 and and old XR350 that I'm been rebuilding for awhile now. Baja Designs kit on it to make it street legal. CRF front end on it. Powdercoated frame and swingarm. Fasstflexx bars. 2 Brothers racing pipe. Etc Making it a motard now. Great fun. And the nicest part is you have big fun going MUCH slower than the SH.
I'm selling my SH and keeping the two singles. One for dirt, one for street.
That's how much I like dual sports.

Actually it looks more like the Honda NX250. I had a KLR650 before the VTR, all things considered it is a great deal for the money. I still miss the KLR when I pass a dirt road/trail going somewhere I can't go on the VTR. What I won't miss is hammering the throttle and having nothing happen (actually it's not that bad - nice and torquey). You'll want to research the dreaded "Doohickey" though. Swap it out asap!

KLRs make great DS machines. Yours look nice! I sold my VTR to buy a dual sport and ended up going with a mint '00 DRZ400S (only had 744 miles on it when I bought it and never saw dirt). Had it for about half a year and a few mods later and then sold it a couple of weeks ago to an aswer elderly man who has come nice collectable bikes. The DRZ will be in good hands. Be sure to check out www.advrider.com if you haven't already. Great forum and website. Some real nice ride reports on there!
That same day I sold it I turned around and drove upstate to pick up another mint bike that was barely used like my DRZ was. I ended up going with a '05 WR250F from an original owner. Holy hell it is night and day from my heavy DRZ!!. Love this bike. Just gotta get the carb tuned and cleaned as it had sat up from the previous owner. Bike only had 100 miles on it when I bought it and was ridden around to follow the PO's little son on his XR100 heh.
Got some goodies on the way for it. JD jet kit, Pro Moto billet exhaust insert, Merge Racing FMS adjustable fuel screw, FLO air filter, Works Connection aluminum frame guards, FLO stainless steel oil filter. Need to get some bark busters and a skid plate and it will be set for the type of woods riding I do.
Here are some vids I shot last Sunday after a heavy rain. Ride was in the Talladega National Forest. It was sloppy as hell. Both of my buddies went down but the WR held its lines . My buddy who goes down in I think vid 3 on the CRF250X ended up tearing ligaments in his knee.

Again, congrats and have fun!!!

I have a silver/blue 2008 KLR650 so it has the modern redesigned look. Yes the seat hurts from the first touch but is has gotten better after it was broken in. Mostly better in that I don't feel like I'm sitting off center on the seat. The seat is narrow and I always felt like I wasn't centered on it. But now, thanks to the seat time and my crushing weight I've beaten that seat down and no longer do I feel like I am sliding off to one side or the other. If you ride on the road like I do with the bike do yourself a favor and reduce the preload on the rear shock, your bum will thank you for it. I just love soaking up bumps with that suspension.
I think I got 3.5K miles out of those stock Dunlap tires. I only road the bike on the road so the 50/50 tires didn't last. The front was still good but the back squared off pretty bad.
I now have 5400 miles on the bike so at 2K miles I expect to get two times the mileage out of these tires (Kenda K761 Dual Sport). They are $90 for a front and rear set shipped and they are holding up fine. They feel fine and much much better at 80 mph than the stock ones did. They won't vibrate you to death since they are more street orientated (80/20).
I ride my KLR650 to work because it gets 50 mpg around town and I sit up really high so hopefully those cagers see me better. Besides the new KLR's lights are awesome, two H5's blind the crap out of people, it is like looking into the sun. Yes during the day time I am all for blinding people if that is what it takes to have them not run me over, I have no apologies for it. Heck they already ran over my SH once because they don't want to turn their heads. The 2008 on up KLR's have headlights that are literally three times better than my SH headlight.
The KLR is all torque and a bit pokey on the HP. It is a great bike for riding 60 mph and under, above that speed it isn't the most capable and comfortable. I prefer riding this bike to work as it just loves to go 30-35 mph which is what I'm stuck doing thanks to the traffic and route. The SH isn't very happy riding that slow it starts to shine a highway speeds.
