Unfortunately i didn't get rid of the shitty OEM dunlop 204 front soon enough and low sided at plus 80, so the insurance paid for it and i bought it back for $1200.

Hi all, new, first-time owner of a '98 VTR. Purchased from the second owner for $2400 who's had it for ten years. 30k miles, Yoshimura pipes, K&N air filter, dyno-tuned and 1" handlebar risers. Ungodly torque! (Albeit with the gas mileage of a Honda Civic, but I can live with that.) After having ridden an '82 Kawi GPz 750 for many years, the way this thing pulls from 3500 rpm up has me smiling and feeling like I must be breaking some law against having too much fun.

Ordered a pair of new Pirelli Diablo Rosso's to replace the worn Michelin Pilots.

Will be looking at some handlebar option in the near future, as the reach is just a bit too much for me and m short arms.

As Tweety once put it I believe
"combine that K&N with Lighter Fluid and a Match"

If you're bike isn't stock, which it certainly sounds like it isn't, get rid of that K&N and go back to a stock air filter or BMC (BMC's are nice but don't last as long).

I've gotten the impression that most forum members haven't had good luck with the K&N filter. The only negative I've noticed (and I've had the bike less than a week, so bear that in mind) is some popping on deceleration -- and the car-like gas mileage.

What is it about the K&N's that are bad? Just curious.

Also, would I likely have to re-jet to something closer to stock? I can't recall exactly, but the previous owner did document some jetting changes.

I'd only change out the K&N filter if you are having issues with it running rough. The K&N apparently can be the culprit sometimes.

Mine had a K&N in it when I bought it, and I don't have any problems with it. My bike gets relatively good gas mileage (around 38-40mpg on all highway), and it runs smoothly.

If you have Stock Jets, You'll be fine with the K&N. If you have it Dynojetted or any other size jets in there, or the needles are shimmed or there's been holes drilled in your slide (If you don't know about these things, you will in a couple weeks after tinkering around with your bike) then you need to get rid of that air filter. When you swap Air filters, you shouldn't have to adjust your jets. It only comes into play when you're dealing with performance pipes, like those yoshis, and when you have an aftermarket air filter. A good thing to find out is whether or not the bike has been jetted. From my experience, a jetted bike with the K&N air filter will stumble a lot. It feels like there's no power across have of the powe band. Laggy response times. And of course, popping on decel. LOTS of popping.

Usually you end up with a fairly large dip or hole in the power band when you run one.

Some folks have made them work but on average they cause more problems than any gain.

No, you're trying to pull it away from it's stock settings. The stock air filter will run good though with aftermarket pipes and a jet kit though. Some people on here believe it to be the best, and usually switch back to it. I'm currently happy with my BMC, I can feel the difference, hear the difference, see the difference. I ran with a K&N for a year. Then when I did my jets, bleh. The bike ran like garbage. Now it's a super beast with a different air filter.
Like I said, if your bike is Jetted, swap the airfilters. It's worth it.

Well, so far this thing seems to (cliche here) pull like a locomotive from 3500rpm and up, but I haven't had it up near redline much -- I just haven't had the opportunity yet. I'll likely ride it as is for another couple weeks and then just swap in the stock filter when I'll have more miles under my belt to compare it to.

Besides that, I'm still at the point where just standing in my garage and looking at it is rewarding.

Well to give you something to compare with, my bike will pull cleanly from 2k in any gear.

Wait till you start doing your own mods.
I stared at mine last night for over an hour.
Feels good doesn't it? haha

Between my GPz750 and this, I also had a 2004 V-Strom 650 for a short while. Fantastic all-around bike, but it just didn't do it for me. Sold it about a month ago; money started to burn the proverbial hole in my pocket, and then I casually begin reading about Superhawks. Then craigslist searches .... From "just looking" to "new owner" didn't take long. I suspect the same will be the case with mods.

Well, that's something. I wouldn't say it doesn't pull cleanly, but the torque really jumps at 3500. Definitely will experiment with the stock filter, though, since I got that with the bike too.

The fact you feel a "jump" is an indication that you are coming out of a hole in the torque curve, should be just a steady constant build up.

Thread derailed. Not that I care, it's just that now I feel bad answering the original question, like nobody will care.

I bought my 98 FireStorm with 52k for $600, plus a battery and DMV fees.

The superhawk does have a relative power "surge" feeling between 3500-4500 rpm. If you look at a typical superhawk dyno graph, you can see that the torque goes up about 10-12 ft-pds in that range, then it slowly builds to it's peak torque from there. And starts dropping off after 7000. The steepest slope in the torque curve is in that 3500-4500 range.

So I wouldn't say feeling a "jump" in that range is an indication of a problem. If it goes from running like crap to running smooth, then yeah, that's probably indicative of a problem. But around 3500 rpm is where a superhawk comes alive.

That was my bad. I'll help put it back on the tracks though.

I got my 98 Superhawk with 17K miles Last year for about $2,500. It came with Heli Bars, Heated grips, braided brake and clutch lines, Corbin seat, K&N Air Filter, integrated LED tail light, flush mount front turn signals, Fender eliminated, and Vance & Hines Exhausts.

Most say the Sargent seat is better than the Corbin for this particular bike. There are a few thread about that on this forum if you're interested.

OMG the rest of the story! These are just the highlights of the occurrences leading to this purchase. I'm sure you could write a book on this purchase and it would be quite a story.

I want to punch you in the mouth.

A similar person who I did punch got a cherry Sp1 in trade for a rebuilt 1996 yzfr6. Can we schedule a time for the violence? when will you be in Tampa?
