how to fix a mirror?

I have a mirror that has a crack down the middle, and a rashed up mirror(just the plastic) with a perfect piece of glass in it. Is there anyway to swap? I don't want to buy another one if i can make one good one out of 2 messed up ones.

thanks guys!

Justin

Take an exacto knife and cut into the rashed mirror to extract the good glass. While you're excavating look for a reasonable way to get the cracked glass out of the good mirror without doing too much cosmetic damage. These look injection molded to me and that may make this whole operation not worth it.

Hang on, I'll go down to the shop and pull one of my stockers out. BRB

I'm back. This plastic is hard as a rock. Exacto no way. Depending on how bad the rash is I would think sanding it out would be a better option. That option exhausted I would appeal to my brothers here to sell me their cast offs for cheap. If they don't have any I would go to ebay and buy a set of R6 mirrors for $50 so you really have mirrors that work.

I busted the mirror housing on my truck and fixed it by drilling two holes, one on each side of the crack, and then "tying" it together with zip ties, might be an option for you.

I have the same question, are the R6 mirrors a direct swap or do you need to modify?

Yes, they bolt right on and the stems are longer so you can see around your elbows. The only minor detail that I didn't like is the footprint of the mirror does not exactly match the footing molded into the fairing. VERY minor detail. I like mine a lot. If you search the archives you'll find a thread on how to take the stock foot off and fit it to the Yamaha mirror stems. Some work for little gain in my book but I'm hardly a perfect purist. Just mostly.

Before you guys order make sure those are the right years. I think that's right but it's been a while. Search "mirror" or "mirrors" and it will come right up.

Sorry Justin, didn't mean to thread jack you but my mirrors are toast and it would be nice to see more than my elbow's anyway!

The footing difference is VERY minor. The thread above (#5) will take you to an ebay offering with pic. Check the years in the archive before you order.

I'd never ride without mirrors... I'm always glancing back to see whats going on behind me.

Bar end mirrors give pretty good visibility, too.

I dont think there is a feasable way to disect 2 bad mirrors into one good one. My attempts have failed anyway. I just bought some mirrors on ebay for @ $30/pair. I use CBR900 mirrors with a hole drilled to allow it to bolt on. They allow you to see way more (better shape). I bought these recently http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3AIT&viewitem= a little small but the LEDs are cool

wizzy, if you search for 2003-2005 r6 mirrors you'll come up with about ten sites for "buy it now" all $34.95 shipped. They're not Yamaha parts but knock offs. These are the ones that I currently run on my VTR.

Very interesting thread, I'm in the middle of a naked conversion so no foot print issue (no fairings) but my Acerbis headlight doesn't have indicators so I'm interested in mirrors with integrated turn signals, my OEM's are rashed as well or I probably wouldn't bother. The link to CBR mirrors w/integrated signals was nice and I may do some research for aftermarket R6 mirrors with turn signals of the correct year. Also, I personally have found bar-end mirrors to vibrate badly (on my buddies inline 4, cant imagine on our V2!), just my $.02.

Also, Opinion are like ********, everyone's got one, and they all stink That said, in my opinion mirrors are very important to safety (if nothing else you can watch traffic behind you when your stopped at a light to minimize your chances of being rear-ended). Increased knowledge of drivers around you just seems valuable. Same reason I want blinkers, any thing I can do (within reason, I'm not wearing a hunters-orange vest!) to help others see me I'll consider, plus it seems like a curtsey to other drivers. That's just my opinion (ha-ha).
