found my fuel reserve

this entire time i was under the impression my 01 had a 19 liter tank and that either i had a huge reserve or that my guage didnt work, anytime it would get to the last dash on the on the guage it would only take about 10 liters to fill. thats just over 2 and a half gallons for those doing the math in their heads. so i figured it was off. and then we did a huge ride yesterday and i had the reserve light come on twice both times around 13 liters. so i finally cracked open the owners manual and its only a 16 liter tank. a little disapointed i was hoping she had a 19 but oh well. its still hitting about 190ish km by the time the light comes on and thats with alot of spirited driving through windy hilly areas and some hard pulls

Where in the world are you? Only the European 01+ Firestorms got the 19L tank (and maybe not even all of Europe) American superhawks and Canadian Firestorms never got the larger tank.

From what I've read North America only got the 16L. Uchi, BEWARE, it may say 16L, but MY bike stops at 14.5L (see my post of several weeks back "out of Gas!"). The rest of what you wrote lines up to my experience almost exactly. I fill my bike on its side stand and just to the height that the gas reaches the "inner lip". If I fill right when the light comes on it is right at 3.1 gal (about 12L) and usually at 117 - 125 miles

I told you on August 19 when you asked about differences between Superhawks and Firestorms. Not that it matters.

You did. And some other people also said it may have a 19 liter.

I like to stand mine up straight and fill her right up near the lip.

I thought the 02+ US models had a larger tank. Not true? I've been living a lie all of these years?

I thought it was 03+ with the larger tanks. Either way, newer US bikes have a bigger tank. Switching to an 03 tank on my 99 gets my fuel light on around 125 miles instead of running out completely at around 114 miles. I tested it for range in July on a road trip to Laguna Seca. I went 135 miles before filling up. Could of gone farther maybe but did not want to run out completely.

I run about 3.3 U.S. Gallons before I hit reserve, and reserve give me another .7 gallons. So whatever that calculates to in liters...

I've run it dry, and it's consistently given me 4.0 useable gallons. I fill it to the brim.

I believe so, but I haven't verified it. And then of course people were misreading the manual. I think it lists imperial gallons or something for some years.

16 liters = 4.22675284 US gallons which should equal about 4 useable or between 15 and 16 liters... That's consistent with mine...

The only other tank manufactured by Honda, for whatever market was introduced in Europe and down under in 01+ and held 19 liter = 5.01926899 US gallons... Should be about 18 liters or 4.7 ish gallon useable volume...

It's a different shape with more pronounced wings and flatter top, easily spotted if you see it... Looks more like the tank on the Suzuki TL...

What year it did or didn't get to the states I wouldn't know though...

But just to make everyone confused the fuel reserve gauge is a sensor on a wire or a float on a wire arm... And wire is bendable... So the calibration on those are way off... I have yet to see two of them show even close to each other...

My '03, like every single VTR1000F ever shipped to the States has a 16 liter/4.2 U.S. gallon fuel tank. VTRs with 19 liter fuel tanks went to Europe and Oz but never to the USA.

Canadian model 03 has been personally verified three times now to run out at ~14 litres. I stood it up and could not get more than 14 litres in. If anyone has a picture of the bike with the larger tank it would be nice to see if it looks much different. Cheers

Found a perfect pic taken at one of our local outings...

The matte black one closest to the camera is a 03 or 05... The one being refueled is a 99 I believe... Look at the shape and the newer is flatter with more pronounced wings...
