Clearance - What can I do?

So after a trackday crash, caused by dragging my pipes, I went with high mount Leo Vinces. While they are beautiful, and the cans are out of the way; the mid pipes are still vulnerable. I felt like I made great progress with my body positioning and and the amount I hang off, but I still managed to drag a couple parts. My options seem to be:

-Raise rearend (I am vertically challenged so I can't go up too much!)
-Verify shock settings
-Install aftermarket rear-sets (which would allow me to hang off further without losing contact with the outside peg)

Any body else have feedback? I am looking for suggestions.

are your pipes still hitting, or other items?

I can't resist..I am hoping that you removed the side stand before your track day crash...it's still on in the photo! Rear sets are a good idea as is sorting out suspension sag and maybe adding some rear spring preload depending on the sag measurements. Really if your dragging those things it's probably time for some suspension upgrades.

mid pipe

I have never removed the sidestand, and it has no indication of ground contact. My crash occured in September and was initiated by my low mount Yosh exhaust (can) touching down. I changed to the Leo High mounts, and during my last trackday, I did scrape the mid-pipe on one occasion, and I just received the above picture documenting the event. While I like these pipes (and will not get rid of them), I was a little disappointed to see how far the mid pipe sits out board.

There were far more turns that I made on this day, that gave me the confidence to know that I can turn the bike properly with out dragging, but still, in extreme cases, it can all touch down. Interestingly enough, the pegs (which are typically the first parts to scrape) were not scraping in the above photo.

The photo below shows how protrusive the mid pipe is.

Cute toes. :P

Your form looks good. Any shots where we can see your body as you are hanging off? It seems you might have a bit more lean available if you shift your upper body off the bike's centerline. That would help with ground clearance. What are your suspension settings? Weight?

Is the first picture from Buttonwillow backwards/CCW?

BW Backwards

Good call, it is Buttonwillow Backwards through "New Turn 2". I have a ton of pictures. When I get a chance I will upload them to a host and post the link for "technique critique". I focused that track day on hanging off more and allowing the bike to maintain clearance. As I stated above, I found that my improved technique really helped. I was dragging a lot less (only 2-3 occurences all day)parts than the day that I low-sided. The nature of this post was really my surprise that I could drag my mid-pipe, when I thought the high mounts were THE solution for preventing the exhaust from scraping.

RE: suspension- I am putting 954 front end on over the next few weeks/months, but I am still running stock shock. I am going to look into raising the rear with a spacer. And next time I go to the track (March or so) I will have Dave Moss assist with suspension set up. I weigh 165 naked, so probably toward 190 all geared up.

I was running BW CW when I crashed at Club Corner pretty fast. It messed me up good, but BW is still my favorite track. Plus, Tita's Pupuseria is YUMMY.

I didn't have trouble with ground clearance, but I had my settings pretty close to maxed out. FWIW, I'm 6' 235 stark naked.

I used low mounts with high mount hangers and never grind hard parts well until the last picture anyway. I also have Harris rearsets and LOVE them!!

Sweet knee sliders! They're so big, you can drag 'em just sitting upright!

you can have a new mid-pipe made that fits tighter to the bike but you may also be running into a limitation of the bike.

i have 2 bro's high mounts & they drag on the left side in EXTREME cases, i have just learned the limitation and have adjusted the line i take ( along with speed ).

Lap-timer + sensor.

Looks like a MyChron.

Good idea putting it behind you. When I had mine in front, I would constantly be looking down and then almost-missing the next turn.

Ding ding ding!!! We have a winner, well sort of, it is my lap timer and sensor but it's an xt. You also pegged the reason for it being behind me, I didn't want it to distract me or change the way I was riding so out of sight, out of mind. That way I ride in my zone that day and worry about the lap time when I'm in the pits and can cleary think about where I'm leaving the extra seconds.

Oh right, XT. I was thinking it's not a MyChron and ended up typing MyChron. Yeah, I swear.
