chain question...
can anyone tell me how tight, loose the drive chain should be for around town riding? i know the owners manual says 1 3/16-1 9/16 free play, but this seems rather loose to me. i know the looser the better at the track but my chain seems way too loose.

Re: chain question...
i thought it was supposed to be 1/2 to 1 1/2 from centerline , like from your finger if you pointed to middle of chain, and then lifted up. i know i like it when its more like 3/4" , seems like my old cbr had more pull when a teenie bit more taught

Re: chain question...
a guy i work with rides an r-6 and he told when at the track your chain needs to be almost falling off, when i checked his chain at work today it seemed alot tighter than mine. like i said the owners manual says 1 3/16-1 9/16, but is that right? seems really loose! and where should i check, the top or the bottom?

Re: chain question...
I always assume the engineers at Honda set the spec for a reason. I agree, it feels looser than on any other bike I've ever had. So loose in fact, that it seems as though the spec is barely met before the chain (if pushed up) contacts the plastic chain slider. However; I figure plastic chain sliders, chains and sprockets are alot cheaper than transmission parts, so mine will stay loose.

Re: chain question...
i am glad to know i am not the only one who thought this was too loose.
also what do you guys use for lube? i was using spray on no fling lube but that made a big mess, my buddy suggested regular motor oil, i works ok but thought i would see what else people are using.

Re: chain question...
If you get the chain too tight it will put undue stress on the tranny resulting in poor shifts. run it about 1 to 1 1/4 inch play.
Screw all the chain lube crap, no fling, wax, this and that and the motor oil as well.
It is an o-ring chain. lube is inside.
I have used one and only method for 25 years and has never failed me and doesn't damage o-rings as some say.
Simply take and old shop rag and soak it with WD-40 and clean/lube the outed links and then turn by hand and put a single pass light coat of WD-40 on the rollers themselfs. Take a short ride and wipe the small amount that flings off the chain from the wheel and you will be good for 300 to 500 miles. Best time to do this is just after finishing a ride while the chain is hot. WD-40 is used mainly to clean, prevent rusting and quite the chain rollers as the run across the spockets teeth. The grease inside the chain rollers sealed by the o-ring is doing all of the real work.
I have 16k on my original chain and sprockets and still going strong and have no messy wheel and swingarm from all the other chain crap.

Re: chain question...
thanx thumper i will give that a shot. i hve tried all the "no sling off" crap and it makes the chain look like hell. i just want something to make the chain quiet, last, and keep it looking new!
