CBR F4i's Fast???

I was out on my 94 VFR750 yesterday cruising along at about 85MPH on I55 south of Chicago. I noticed a bike gaining on me slowly and it begins to follow for a while about 100 yards back. Then he blasts past me in a kind of ‘in your face’ way and pulls way ahead until he slowed buy two cars in each lane. I did not speed up but just caught up to him because he was held up; 2001 F4i with pipe, rider in full leathers, Alpine Star boots etc. Now I always thought CBR F4i’s were pretty quick and I can tell he is going to peg it as soon as the car in front of us clears. I am three bike lengths behind and since the road is straight and empty in front I figure I will try to hang with him just to see how the VFR does. So the road clears and he jumps on it and I follow; first surprise is that he is not pulling away, second surprise is that I am gaining. I help it open until I was past him then rolled off the gas. I was really surprised (maybe I shouldn’t have been) and was thinking my Superhawk would have destroyed this guy since it is significantly faster than my VFR. By the way apparently I wasn’t the only one surprised; the other rider looked it as well. JIM

I suspect his ham-handed engine mods or poor gear choice slowed him down. He shouldn't have been that bad.

You could be right except I was in top gear when I went buy (I started in 5th, it was a slow process) and he had a very clean bike and expensive gear which would make me think he might have a Power Commander installed. I do have a Micron on my VFR and put a jet kit in which has made a noticeable improvement in acceleration. But back to my earlier point; am I wrong in thinking F4i's should be faster than a VFR? JIM

Cool

How 'bout just ask the guy for a heads up match next time you see him?

You ride slow for your bike's capability.. doesn't that apply for most everybody?

Who cares if F4i's are slow? we all know it's not the bike, it's the rider that makes fast definitive.

Cool

I will never see the guy again, Chicago is a big area. While I would rate myself as a good rider there was no skill other than holding the throttle wide open and shifting into top gear.

I agree that there is nothing that this top end contest proves, just want to know if the F41 is considered faster; I know guys who think it if (faster than a VFR). JIM

You should be able to find an article with specs like 0-60 times, top speeds, 60-100 roll on, etc on an F4i and compare to the Superhawk - believe cycle world had a 2005 article with it the SH specs compared to a Duc999.

That sounds like work. the F4I has something like 100 HP and 40 LB/P

Rick the Superhawk is not even an issue because I was on a VFR750 and my Hawk Is way quicker and faster that my VFR. The VFR has 48ftlbs and 100HP in it's current set up. My SH is 68ftlbs and 101HP. JIM

Just wanted to say that there are the performance test articles out there on the Internet that give you an idea of a bike's performance, Superhawk, VFR, CBR, etc.

I haven't looked at the torque curves for the two engines, but I'm pretty sure you'll find your answer there. The F4i will post a similar peak horsepower number, but because the torque curve is peaky, the power quickly falls off from the peak. The VFR has more displacement and is bound to have a flatter torque curve and more linear power delivery.

My wife's 2005 CBR F4i with slight mods isn't even close to being "fast". The CBR owner that buzzed passed you was undoubtedly in mid-teens RPMs and probably in 3rd gear.

Unimpressive.

A SHawk can do what he did to you easilly and without effort.

I've been on rides with them I think they are faster. I could rip most of them a new A but in a straight line where all they had to do was twist the throttle they pulled me a little. On paper they do a stock 1/4 at 10.75 and top out at 157 vs our 11.17 and 151.
