Anyone wrenching today

Well it was a nice Saturday in TN, I should have fired up the VTR or the Streetard and went riding, but i found myself fixing my old and worn out Header wrap. It's been probably 20k miles and 5 years since i installed the original wrap and it had gotten pretty ragged over the last year or so.

I bought new wrap some time ago and today i found my self more interested in turning wrenches than riding.

So i got out the tools removed the exhaust and removed the old wrap. Then placed the new 50 feet of wrap in a bucket of water and started the wrapping shortly after. The wrap goes on 10 times better when it is soaked first. You then start at the rear of the exhaust and wrap toward the front, streaching it as tight as you can and overlapping about an 1/8" to 3/16". Secure at each end with Safety Wire and you are good to go for another 4 or 5 years.

This stuff is so durable. The pipe looked great under the old wrap and if it gets wet, it just dries from the exhaust heat.

It's really not hard to do, just be sure to soak it first and start in the rear so the over lapping is more wind resistant and less likely to catch something.

This is the 50' by 1" roll. It takes all 50' to do it with none left over.

I spent a little time rebuilding a CBR1000 fork today. The spring was out of spec, so I ordered a new pair. Gonna start rebuilding the brake calipers soon also. Taxes kept me from starting that project. One day I may just get this front end on the Hawk.

Well to be honest with you i don't remember where i bought mine the last time, but lots of places sell it. Here is one link and they even have it in colors. Don't know how the color stuff holds up but the white does very good. If you get it dirty due to getting caught out in a rain ride with nasty roads you can just spray some deluted Simple Green on it and hose it off with water. It will clean up like new. No rubbing, just spray with Water hose.

I know the stuff is in most of your local Motorcycle dealers distributor books as well.

50' x 1" is all you need...

I know what you mean, I got an Antique 82 CB750F that i am converting to a SuperF, which basically means i am replacing the crappy early 80's forks with CBR600F3 forks and front and rear wheels. This will allow me to dump the old 18" and 21" bias-ply tires for the sportbike standard 17" 160/120 setup.

I just got to get time to disassemble the forks and weld in a stock CB750F triple tree stem and have the forks powder caoted.

Someday i will get around to it.

Hey ghopki1, i see you got a CRFR as well. How does the 490 klit compare to the stock piston.

I am running my CRF450R half year in the woods and the other half of the year on the street. She is about ready for her second piston and i may put a crank in her and a big bore kit. Just curious how you like yours.

Good luck on the electrical issue, electrical crap can be a pain in the A$$ to figure out.
You might swap the wires on the front signals from left to right to help narrow down if it is a turn signal assembly or somewhere else. The wires are long enough to connect the left front ones to the right light and vice versa.

My son and me will be back in the garage today tearing down the bottom end of his CRF85 to get it ready for a new crank and 101.5cc big bore kit.

P.S. for you "DIY" guys out there Wiseco started a brand new special Jan. 1st where they are now including the Crank with all gasket, seals and bearings for a new low price.

It is an awesome woods weapon. I gained @ 3-5 Hp down low in the rpm's but lost a little above 9-10K. You would not want it for Supermotard. I do however LOVE it in the woods. Just hard to get the rear tire to hook up good. I run a 120/80 rear.

My son needs a new bike. His 110 is about maxed out for him. We were looking at overboring his 110 to a 143 (super kit) but I am thinking that I should just use the $$ on a CRF150F or something.

BTW: I love working on Honda's. They engineer them to be simple. Kawi's and Yami's that I have wrenched on just do not make sense sometimes.

Know what you mean, all i got in the Stable is Big Red. Street, Dirt Bikes and ATV's except my girlfriends SV650S, which i admit is a well built bike and i could be persueded to by one of those for myself.

My son is 14, he's been riding and occasionally racing since he was 6. We looked at the CRF150RB for him, but i cannot see throwing that much $$ into a bike he will only ride another year. CR85R and CR85RB are everywhere for less than 2K.

I was amazed how well he handled the transistion several years ago from his hoped up XR80 to the more powerful 2-stroke. It's a great woods bike and i bet it is 30 pounds lighter than the XR or KLX.

I starting to watch for used CRF250R now as he is can ride my 450 now.

Question?

when you did the exhaust wrap, do you have to replace exhaust gaskets, or can you reuse the old one?

My son just turned 10 and we are looking at the 150F not the R right now. We are still keeping a watchful eye out for a good used CR 85 though..

The Superhawk got a final inspection and new faring parts ordered,, loks like it got away with just the busted plastic of the left side outer. no mount or brace damage. The new Windscreen will wait to go on until the faring part arrives (thanks Nuhawk)
Ordered some parts for Nuhawks bike,, see if we can get the clutch working right.

Looking good Thumper.

I haven't had much time to finish up my cluster swap till today due to the storm damage around me. Still have a few things to fine tune on it. Hopefully I will have it finished up in the next few days or before the weekend (Praying for Great riding weather).

TXSuperChicken,

Looks like we are in the same boat, My son and me got the CR85RB down to about the same look as your sons 125 rollong frame.

We got the crank case stripped down to where we need to bust the cases, but we do not have the right kind of flywheel puller and had to stop for today. FYI, Wiseco has a new package deal on their cranks that include the bearings, seals, crank, and gaskets. Be sure to oreder that one. My sons CR85 crank kit is only $150 to the door with all the peices.

We already sent his head and cylinder to Eric Gorr for a 101cc big bore re-work and porting.

Great work, just pricy.. Though less then other lessor tuners, so it all works out.

back to the topic..LOL
"Anyone wrenching today"

Yup, just installed my new left side fairing, and Puig smoke double bubble.

So nice to have my nearly new (looking) and flawless SH back again. Now she needs a good bath and a wax. Then the wife and I are going to go for a ride and get the bikes all dirty again.

I got busy this weekend. Pulled the valve covers off to check the valve adjustment(good as new, 36,000 miles), replaced the CCT's with APE, replaced the spark plugs, chopped the rear fender at both ends, painted the grills on the radiators, and sanded the pyramid lower and targa hugger to get ready for painting. I also took the vacuum plug out of the front cylinder and installed a vacuum adapter with a section of fuel line and a plug along with a vacuum tee/plug on the other vacuum line so I can have easier access whenI sync the carbs. About a month ago I replaced the front/short velocity stack in the air box with a long. Bike runs great with two long and a K&N
