Fine, how about a Bmw r1200 HP2. Really a cool bike. I think there are some carbon kits from motorad to keep the weight down.
Wait, oh, geez, I just noticed my last two suggestions are ***** and dont meet the op's needs or wants. Fine, ducati (for longevity), Moto guzzi (for their amazing dealership network), aprilia rr bikes (because you said you dont want this much power), suzuki tls, tlr, sv1000 (because the power delivery of the vtr was undesired and these are as close to identical as possible, with an engine that requires you to work it or it will buck....anything less than 4000rpm). Definitely, buy

7moore7 hahaha that's a mad one
and as far as BMW S1000RR, why not get the ZX12R and just get it over with?)
Come on people, let's get with our feet on the ground
SV 650 SV 650 SV 650 SV 650 !!!!!!
Unless somebody pays for the difference to a S4R or something

Yes,but the ZX12 has massive torque,and enough hp (spoken like a true numbers/wikipedia geek <------ )
Now letting joke aside, I know what I want...
A SV650N with gixxer front end (wheel, rotors, calipers, forks, triples, clip-ons,brake pump). I know it will cost a bit, but I really really love the "cafe racer" look of the naked SV with round headlight and clip ons, not to mention the gixxer conversion will make a huge improvement on overall bike handling, not just eliminate the classic front dive under heavy braking...
I understand that switching to gixxer forks, the nose will drop 1.5" or so, gixxer forks being somewhat shorter than stock sv forks?
BTW, don't gsxr-750 /600('01-'03), and sv 650N ('99 -onwards) use 120/70/17 front tyres ?
Some use various parts to switch to a full gixxer end (not necessary to take all the parts from the same year gixxer (for instance '03 gsxr750 or so), various items match up,from older generation of gixxers).
I don't know if I'll be able to pull this off (the front end swap) since it will cost...
Also I'm a bit fucked up know, I can't decide which version I love more, the '99-03 SV 650 or the '03- 07 ....
I love the chassis of the older one and the dials/chromed on the exterior, and the tail /rear end of the newer one.
I think I'll be better of with a newer bike though...
I'd love to get the 1000 N, it would have more pull if I'll carry a passenger or luggage, but I'll just need to test ride both bikes to see if I really actually feel that the SV650N is short on anything..
Being used to VTR's 98 nM at 7000 RPM, the 62nM torque of the SV,available only at 7500 RPM will feel somehow odd... but I don't wanna speak about numbers like a superficial moron until I actually ride the damn things...

seriously?
But NOBODY on this forum can convince me that you have to be more carefull with the throttle on a 4L like the 600RR than on a VTR 1000 F.
If you hit a ****** bump in the road and your hand is not eased on the throttle, try to compare the consequences on the VTR F vs. 600 RR.

1- start jerking off with your left hand instead of your right.
2- use two of those no snag hair bands between your throttle and starter button
3- quit smoking crack/pcp
4- pass a **** test to get a job?
for someone with no money for a new ride (insider) that posted this many times......
can i suggest a schwinn? 21 speed... only if you can handle that manpower torque over 21 gears!

I agree with others that say try the SV650. I have a 2004 that I picked up for <$2K. The only change from stock was the handlebars, a Devil slip on exhaust and one tooth lower in the front.
The lil SV is a blast to ride on back roads and fine as a commuter. As others have said, any of its shortcomings can be fixed for little money. A few GSXR parts and it can be be made to handle and brake very well. Also, if/(when) I drop it there's plenty of replacement parts available (aftermarket & OEM).
The SV650 definitely lacks the grunt of the VTR. The extra torque of the VTR and associated wheel hop when diving into a bumpy turn raise the pucker factor in a hurry. I'd rather ride my SV650 over my VTR if I'm going to spend most of my time on bumpy back roads. If the roads are a bit smoother the VTR usually gets the nod as it rides like it's on rails and the extra power is great. Both are guaranteed to put a smile on.
I've no experience with the SV1000 though I suspect you would like it just fine. You would spend a similar amount (as the SV650) to get the suspension, brakes, etc sorted to your liking. IIRC FI is available on both the 650 and the 1K after 2003 so no advantage there.
The few things that would make me lean toward the SV650 is weight, parts availability and resale. You can really can flick that 650 from side to side and making mid corner corrections are do-able. Regarding parts, there has to be 10x more SV650's on the road than SV1000's and Fleabay is always there. Finally, you know there will be a line of people ready to take the SV650 off your hands when you're ready to part with it. Most people who have ridden one for even a short time enjoyed the ride and would love to have one (especially as a second bike). I'm not so sure that many people feel the same about the SV1000.
Try them all, pick what you want and fits your needs and ride. I figure it's more about the actual ride that what I ride.
Good luck with your hunt.

bought my Hawk from a guy who bought a new SV1000. The Hawk smokes the SV, and it p's him off to no end! I do love the style and EFI of his SV, but grin like crazy when the old Hawk pulls away.
