530-Chain work 101

hey guys, just won a new DID 530zvm x-ring chain for a great price on ebay. the seller said the chain will be shipped with a RIV link. i guess its some kind of master link D.I.D. uses and can only be put on with a special tool? i hope not. im used to those "V" shaped clips you tap on. anyone know of this DID chain master link? i thik its a side plate. also, my air cutter broke that i used to use for my chains, so now i got a dremel tool with cutter blades. ya think itll cut it?

RIV link? That refers to a rivet, right? It's the other way to connect chains (besides using a link). I use a chain tool that cuts chains and can rivet links together. It was only $20.

It's most likely a rivet link OR...... it could be the new screw on/break it off link that requires no special tools. I saw it on another forum but I don't recall which company was marketing it.

im assuming he meant rivet tool as well. i looked at the email and he said it DOES need a special tool to get it on. its prolly like the one in the link below

Motion Pro, that's the one I've got. Thanks for jogging my memory.

I put a clip-type link on my friend's bike, and he hasn't had any problems with it. But my mind is more at peace with a rivet type.

You can put it on with a piece of wood, hammer and a flat punch but the tool is easier. I had mine done by a guy at the track for 10 bucks.

well, i will use the wood technique. 2 questions:

1. will a dremel tool cut the chain?

2. dont i need to flatten the pin heads so that the "figure 8 " shaped end cap doesnt come off?

i know theyre stupid questions, but the weather is turning here for the better, and im too anxious to ride to wait for the tool comin in the mail, and too cheap to bring it somewhere! hehehe

Where did you get it for $20.00? Only ones I can find are like $90

utah,
the last one is the one i have. itll push the pin through cleanly, and flatten the rivet ends on the master link for ya. HOWEVER, i would get the one neil recommended too. the reason being is that mine is tough s nails, but i noticed it was a lil pain to get the NEW rivet plate set and ready to go for flattening the pins around it. i simply put my tool im between the rivets on master link and smashed the rivet plate down. slipped off a couple times, but whenit was close, i lined the tool up with rivets and flattened them. the tool NEIL suggested will smoosh the new master link plate on for you better. but you DONT really need it.
just my 2 bits.

I think I would go with the one you have, only because it breaks chains too right?

yes, breaks- as in pushes pin out of chain. if you had a smal 3$ C-CLAMP from auto zone you could set the plate in place, then use the tool to finish the job off and flatten heads.
