50,000 Mile Club

How many members have accumulated 50,000 miles (80,467km) on their Superhawk/Firestorm?

I'm at 50,059 miles after a fun ride on Ortega Highway today with my wife, on her SV, and a friend on his 999 Duc.

I know there are others with many more miles. 8541Hawk mentioned last week that he has 85,000 miles on his, and mikstr has many km's, as does Tweety. Greg (Hawkrider) posted a couple months ago when he hit 50k miles.

This counts most if you put all the miles on your VTR yourself, but feel free to report any Superhawk with 50,000+ miles.

Edit: 70,021 miles on 3/13/13.

I've got right around 50,000 miles currently! 51 or 52 maybe, without going to check. It had 16,000 when I got it 4 years ago.

Oh no Joe!!! Don't turn this into another oil thread.

Pro Honda 10w40 every 3000 miles. Original CCTs. Replace brake fluid and coolant every 2 years. No stand up wheelies. Hey... it's a Honda!

My '78 CX500 (modded for canyon racing) had 78,000 on it, and running great, when I sold it in 1986.

Gas and oil (Mobil 1 15w-50) are the main ingredients. Add a sprinkle of tires, and a touch of Scottoiler. Simmer. Add a new battery after 9 years. Replace it again after 2 months (Parts Unlimited label). Beat well (like a stepchild) at least once per year at the track. Let sit 7 months while on deployment. Sprinkle with lots of aftermarket parts. Serve warm.

The original R/R lasted almost 11 years. Original chain - 25k miles with the Scottoiler. Still going strong on the 520 conversion at 25k. Rear tire goes after about 3k miles, front 6k. Oil changed every 3k with OEM filter. If you love it, it will love you back!

Well I've done my oil changes at between 3-3.5K miles but you usually can tell it's time when the shifting gets a little "notchy" I've tried a whole bunch of different oils but now use Mobil 1 4t 10w-40 as my bike shifts the best with it.

Other than that I didn't even have the valve covers off until 55k miles and then it was just because I was feeling guilty but only had 2 valves out of spec by .001" did the second valve lash check at around 70-75k and again had 2 valves out of spec by .001"

I've also replaced all the coolant hoses (as mine rolled off the line on 4-97)
and the overflow bottle cracked around 4 years ago, so that has also been replaced.

Had 1 R\R failure which cause me to also put in the second battery.

Tires, chains & sprockets...... lost count of those

Plugs and air filter, once a year when I do the fork oil.
Rear shock every 2-3years

That's about it as far as I remember.

So nothing really out of the ordinary, in fact less than with any other bike I've owned

I'm a hair over 36k (corrected for gearing) and had a run of bad luck with almost every electronic component on the bike! I've put a little over 3k on it.

Seems like a really hot girlfriend, gives you most of what you want but makes you beg for mercy when she asks for your wallet =)

I plan on riding 'er till there are no more parts to put on the damn thing.

my 84vf1000f has 78k on her and still has 170psi on all 4 cyl and I've gone through 3 water pumps and in my command, 4 sets of tires.

84,000 km. I just did regular maintenance, some preventive maintenance (reg/rec and manual CCT's), changed some things I didn't like, replaced what wore out, drained the carbs before storing it for the winter and tried not to toss it down the road. It's a great bike. I can't think of anything on the market now that I'd like to replace it with.

Lube the throttle cables regularly & grease the wheel bearing seal cavity & axles every tire change, changed to a TRB headset after 50k miles without wheelies (but OEM caged rollers looked great), I change clutch & brake fluid annually, coolant every 2 years (thinking about Engine Ice this time), fork maintenance every 15~20k miles (Greg massaged my OEs what's it 2 years ago?) along with Penske 2-way rebuild, put dielectric grease on every connection & terminal, changed from Mobil 1 15W-50 when they took out all the good stuff & now use Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic 5W-40 every 4k+ miles with a Purolator PureOne 3.5" filter [now the W-M ST long but now that they stopped selling them may go back to Pure 1 or ?](U must trim the Chin faring to do so & I made an oil filter heat shield due to the close adjacency of the front header; wrapped both headers bcuz the rear is so close to the shock), tires every year or so at 5~7 rear (though the Dunlop RoadSmarts had over 9K miles Rear!) now have on I have a set of Avon Storm 2 Ultras ready to go on. Wish I would have gone 520 last chain/sprocket set (16/43) but I usually get over 25k miles with my Scott Oiler (on since maybe 15k miles but I blend my own oil using O-ring safe chain saw oil & Marvel Mystery Oil to a comparable viscosity index as the Scott Oil), APE CCT just to be safe, just for fun. Replaced this winter the original unfinned VR-R (had had heat sink paste under it against the rear subframe & CPU heat sink/fan on it with supply/exhaust ducting forever) with a Kawasaki Mosfet unit & Eastern Beaver's harness direct to battery, on the second battery only out of guilt 2~3 years ago (a not so hot Energizer unit, stick with Yuasa); won't say more for fear of jinxing my well over 70k miles fastest Italian Red 03/97.

At 56,000 miles or so. Been wrecked at least four times and I still rebuild it, its worth it. Just normal maintenance oil tires chains etc.

I'm approaching 85,000 km.
Only replaced stock CCT's with stock ones, once.
One set of rear wheel bearings.

And I'm pretty hard on my bike.

I use Castrol 10 W40.

Oh, it's an 05.
Will need a new battery soon

I am rapidly closing in on (my first) 100,000 miles on mine. Mind you, it had 15,000 km (9,000 miles) on it when I bought it but I contributed over 130,000 km since 2001. As many of you know, I had the engine rebuilt last fall (not because it needed it as it still ran like a top, no oil burning, no smoking, fire right up every time,....), adding a few premium bits along the way (ceramic bearings in tranny, DLC coating on intake valves and piston pins, JE pistons with moly skirt coat and ceramic top coat; also had the crank balanced for reduced vibration - smoother cruising, quicker pick-up and and enhanced longevity), in addition to replacing ALL wear items (new valves, bearings throughout, all chains, new oil pump, new seals all around,....). I have began running Supertech oil filters (longer 3.25" version; thanks to filter cross-reference article on Web and linked on the forum on numerous occasions) and will soon be adding German Castrol (0W30; a heavy 30 wt (almost 40 wt) Group IV full synth which is virtually shear-proof) in a 50/50 mix with the Rotella 15W40 dino oil I have been using for break-in. I ran OEM air filters for all but the last year (currently have a BMC street) and will soon be reverting to OEM filters (based, again, on reading about engine wear with gauze-type filters.... blame bobistheoilguy.com for my new-found awareness of all things oil and filters).

Not big on scrubbing and shining but am always on top of ,my game when it comes to preventive maintenance....
Looking forward to the next 100,000.... Bike is a dream to ride and makes me grin like a school kid every time I twist the throttle.....

Well Jerry they are all Hondas, but come-on, get out there and ride that VTR.

Summer is here however, and Ortega has shown noticeably increased traffic this week, along with more CHP presence. I love spring and fall riding.

Edit: Today on Ortega was great, light traffic and not a LEO in sight.

Aloha, Just checked the mileage, 67541.0 ( not corrected for gearing) . 6/97 early release. Ran Motol 10/40 most of her life. Switched to Honda Pro 4 10/40 After they removed the Moly. Running original CCTs( Just got MCCTs from Kreiger). Changed R/R and second battery after loosing gauge signals and stalling on the way to Kailua-Kona(Hawaii). Pushed her three blocks in full leathers uphill to the Honda shop. Hawaiian Humidity. Probably lost about five pounds that day.
On her 60k mile tune up at the Honda Dealership, 1 valve shimmed- 1 tight, rest within specs. No valve adjustment need until them. Oil change every 3K miles along with factory filters. Using factory air cleaner. Running Two brothers, DID/Renthal sprockets.
Getting ready for the next 50K miles/SMILES.

Martin, Over 60,000 miles in 2 years? You've been riding that thing!

I milked 41,000 out of the OEM chain and sprockets. The sprockets weren't that bad, but the chain was quite tight in spots. And the D.I.D gold chain looks very nice. I try to do a half assed clean, and lube it every 500 miles, but I often go over by a couple hundred.

Also after trying at least 6 different chain lubes during the last 6 years, I finally found one I like, Torco Power Slide.

How about I list the parts I haven't changed out? That'd make the list a lot shorter!

I tend to ride my bike hard... So she gets some goodies, oil frequently (going by feel, and wear, not miles), new tires when they get raggedy...

I tend to like form over function, so my bike has a few nicks and scratches, and my riding buddies say it needs wasning... I don't care, It gets a bath once a year or so, if she needs it or not... Other than that, no polishing, only riding...

I'm at 96,581 km (60,025 miles) after this morning's ride.

This season I will attempt to get to 99,999.9 km. Will the odometer re-set to 00000.0 km ??

my '02 sadly has not been ridden much in last 2 yrs.

And that will cont. this year (recovering from cage crash)

Thus, I'm at about 46,000 miles

Ape CCTs @ 30k, r/r @ 38k, ECU @ 43k.

I use semi-syn oil about every 2 to 3k, clean K&N about 2 times a year, plugs probably every 2 years or so.

Was thinking of selling it, but I know I will regret it if I do.

Best Mod # 1 Ohlins rear & Racetech springs. # 2 Was Erion's I put on after the year I bought it new. I needed them then as I was lane splitting everyday on commute into NYC & peeps couldn't hear me. I still remember the 1st day after I put them on, I revved the motor & the cars split to let me pass - on the GWB.

Lastly, I use Honda Owner link to track everything I've done to the VTR - After 1 year of use I had almost 7k on it Jeez I wish I could do that now. Maybe next year
