200 miles per tank?

I'm lucky/happy that my fuel warning light is dead accurate- comes on when I'm down to 7/10 gallon.
If it came on when I still had 30%-35% of my fuel left, it would annoy me enough to put a little piece of duct tape over the damn thing and keep my eye on the tripmeter.

The best I have gotten out of my 98' was 42mpg. That was just a day of not really being in a mood to push it verry hard. The worst was 29mpg, but it was worth every bit of fun getting it that low.

I average 35mpg, all stock aside from baffelctomy. The worst I ever got was about an hour of stupidty that ran through my body. My gas light came on at 85miles on the trip odometer. I had it literally tapped out on the highway for 85 miles, never dropping below 135. On some long downhills I saw 160. I thought two things were going to happen that day : My engine was going to explode, and I was gonna be Bubba's bitch for the rest of my life. That was by far the dumbest thing I've ever done on the 'Hawk. My goodness, I couldn't even being to count the amount of cars I scooted past on that run.

Otto Man;
Your 85 mile run sounds like fun. Need some tank cam video next time.
Now that I'm a bit older and an almost a semi responsible adult, I don't run like that unless I'm in the middle of nowhere boonies, or if within the proximity of civilization, more than a minute or two at a time.
One of the nice things about cops is that at anything over 110 or 120 mph, the only ones you likely need worry about will be in front of you.
Here in Ca. the Highway Patrol isn't allowed to use radar, which is why the Teamsters are my favorite labor union.
Of course these days you do have to consider helicopters and rightiously indignant citizens with cell phones.

I still can't believe that engine didn't blow up.

Hey Otto,
My light came on at 95 miles the afternoon I pushed it to the 29mpg mark. Little different situation though. Had a family member being life flighted from south Ga to Emory due to a head injury. Kid is lucky to be alive, he was given a 3% chance of waking up and managed to make a full recovery within about six months. I got the call and was asked if i could get to the hospital since the rest of the family was four hours away. Said sure not a problem and stuck it in the wind. Looking back it's like "Hey dumbass you could be laying there if something had gone wrong." It was still fun while it lasted.

Greg is right in that it WAS Montana. From '95-'99 daytime speed limit was "reasonable and prudent". Big Brother FedGov was displeased, threatened to cut federal funding. Montana freeway speed limit is now 75mph.

Update:
My bike is still getting mid forties mpg in 75mph freeway riding. If I back off I can still get 50 mpg. That's better than the Prius or Corrola hybrids, as good as any bike I've ever had over 550cc. There are enough people around here besides me getting forties mpg on the highway that you have to know it's possible.

Do you have stock gearing?
My light came on today at 114 miles and when it does I could only put in 3.2-3.3 gallons, never more. I never seen anything higher than 115 on my trip before the light came on even with the smoothest rides. If you got 213 miles, I say damn, all the power to ya. What are the mods?

Impressive mileage, RK1. On long, mellow trips I've gotten 40 to 45 mpg, which I'm happy with, but I still ran out of gas twice on a cross country trip due to the small tank and the lack of gas stations out in the rural west. Carrying a little spare gas isn't crazy.

i just got 75 miles this weekend when my low fuel light came on. the kid i bought the bike from changed the rear sproket. he also jetted it. it turns over 4000 to 5000 rpm's on the highway cruising around 70 - 80 miles per hour. i got less than 25 mpg when i fugured it up. speedo is off a bunch too. does anyone know how to heal a speedo? how many rpm's does a stock bike turn at 70 mph???

VTR with stock sprockets turns just a tad over 3900 rpm at actual 70 mph.
You might want to count sprocket teeth to see what you've got. Sprockets are cheap- about $20 for fronts and $30 for rears. If your final drive is way lower than stock and you want better mileage, you could go back to or at least closer to the stock setup.

i just got 160 before the light came on. was all highway runnin around 70mph. i weigh 220lbs and had about 15-20 lbs of gear on the pass seat. usually see about 120 with city riding before the light comes one. i have a 03 with jet kit/filter/jardines.
