Thanks for the link Mike. I'm passing it on to friends.
I can't believe this story isn't big news today. I was surprised that a WWI vet had survived into 2011. We are also losing WWII vets at a fast rate.
I just checked the newspaper, and sadly no mention of Frank Buckles. And his story probably won't even make the network news tonight...too much to report about train wrecks like Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan.

Thanks, Mike! May he rest in peace and be remembered by his nation and family forever.
It hardly jolts me now that the news media and the normal purveyors of such are selling media not news.
I feel like tuning to Radio Free Europe just to get a fair shake on the things that really matter to me.
BTW his tribute complete with WW1 photographs was on the Shepard Smith show on FOX this afternoon. It's interesting that part of his longevity was partly due to the fact that he was never shipped out. He did his entire service stateside.
Nonetheless, he is an icon of someone who valued the service. He lied about his age at 16 and joined. Find that kid on the streets today.

He didn't just serve stateside, he was sent to France, but he never saw any combat. I think you were thinking of the two vets who passed before him. Neither of them had gotten out of bootcamp before the war was over. Mr. Buckles was the not only the last American WWI vet, but also the last man to actually serve in Europe during the war. He said he spent his days in France seeing the countryside although he apparently pushed to get sent to the front he just never got the chance. He was also a prisoner of war of the Japanese during WWII although not in a civilian capacity, he was in Asia for work and was seized. The man sure lived a life.
