What he said, and I'll add that IIRC, it's 'not illegal' in CA, but there are laws prohibiting it in all of the other 49 states. Some places are more permissive than others, but it's not officially recommended.

To my understanding, It's illegal in all the 49 states except CA where there is no law defines preventing lane splitting as mentioned above, but when it comes to your own safety I rather think of it as a personal choice to obey or not, laws will not save your life!!!

+100 it only takes one douche to pull over a little bit in your path because someone hates their life and is pissed because they're stuck in traffic. Truckers used to do it always up north when they were stuck in traffic. Hell when I used to ride to work everyday I'd get people furious by simply pulling around them to the front of the pack at traffic lights (not sure why it's not like I was holding them up). Lots of a-holes out there, just something to keep it mind...

Well its legal, unless U get caught.
Yes, better in Europe. I was in France in '07 for Rugby World Cup & last race of season for SBK, when Toseland won it. That was a great trip
Anyway, the moto's / scooters would ride where ever they could to keep moving.
Too bad our country drivers, mostly suck *****.
Lastly, when I lived in NE NJ & commuted to NYC via the VTR, I would lane split everyday across the GWB & FDR Drive. I only did it when traffic was mostly stopped. It got easier when I put the Erion pipes on it. I still remember the 1st time, I revved the motor & the cars split open for me like Moses parting the Red Sea!
One time I did have a problem was a guy tried to pin me in on FDR while going home, he made the mistake of leaving his window open while I finally got around him & I pulled up & punched him in his head - ******* Haters - hahaha
And Only NYPD Hiway 1, cops would care (they patrol the hiways of the NYC boros) Local precinct cops didn't care & passed them many times, carefully though.
Oh man I'm watching EPL (English soccer) Man City v. Sunderland - what a game!!

Did the same thing in NY for 8 years going from Staten Island & Brooklyn to NYC to work, have to say, besides the occasional idiot and bad snow it was the fastest and easiest commute there and parking for that matter.
Oh and yes, Europe is much friendlier for bikers! Main reason is that bikers actually commute more then just for pleasure, thus it is accepted means of transportation by far more then in the states. Should the oil prices will go really high to unbearable costs in the US, maybe this point of view will became closer to the European view.

And ur correct, about saving time w/ NYC metro traffic. I could make it to UN -(I work as a construction manager) from my casa (at the time in Bergen Cty - 15 mins to GWB) and could make to UN in 40 mins max. If I was in a cage, add 30 mins. God I miss that easy commute. Plus going out in NYC, I would park my moto right on sidewalk or between cars

Here is something you want to consider on the road, you never know who is the idiot in the cage next to you, you may also consider that as a zoo cages with random wild animals that may bite you at any time even if they look harmless, that said, I personally don't waist time on exchanging what I feel about them cage drivers, completely useless you do the math.

Here is something in addition, I counted the following for both if it would be in the states
Guy: disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, wanton malicious damage to a motor vehicle.
Girl: disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, wanton malicious damage to a motor vehicle (4 counts), aggravated assault & battery with a dangerous weapon (to wit- motor vehicle), attempted motor vehicle homicide, operating so as to endanger, reckless endangerment, marked lanes violation, improper parking.
