Gun guru's ... Help please Calico M100
Im selling some old dirtbikes on craigslist and this guy wants to know if i want to trade one for a Calico M100 rifle.
I have wanted a gun for quite a while. mostly for home protection, but after reading a few articles on it, this gun sounds like it would be kinda fun to shoot at the range.
Just looking for any advice you guys might have to offer.
If i trade him ill be getting:
Calico M100
2 - 100 round magazines
Custom case
Spare ammo
Silencer

If that is a real silencer there better be a federal tax stamp for it or you will get in trouble. If it is just a faux "flash hider or barrel extension" then you will be ok. For a plinker I would prefer a Ruger 10/22. The Calico is very unique and could be worth some money.

Not my first choice for self defense but you could do worse. Fun gun for the range is right, and with ammo prices as they are, a smart gun for the range.
If somebody is aiming to hurt you? Shoot them 10 or 15 times with a semi .22 and I'm sure they'll stop bothering you!

Unless he is a Class III dealer you cannot buy a real silencer from him. So it's either faux, or I'd avoid it. The gun itself might not be a bad deal though.
Even if he is a dealer it takes almost 6 months to get the OK from the ATF for the silencer. Plus the "tax stamp" itself is $200, then the silencer usually runs anywhere from $500 to $2000 depending on quality. The fine for having a silencer with out proper paperwork is $10,000 AND ten years in prison. Just FYI...

Some guys, especially if they were part of some "right wing militia", would probably keep a real suppressor and just hide it. I doubt it's real so don't concern yourself.
I've heard a 2 liter pop bottle makes a pretty good disposable suppressor when snugged over the muzzle of a .22, but of course I have no personal experience to relate in such matters.
As ridiculous as it sounds, if BATFE found you with a pop bottle on the muzzle of your .22, or maybe just a bottle with .22 cal. hole and some powder residue, you'd be in trouble.

I don't know anything about that gun, but I know a great deal about silencers. There is no way anyone would give a real one up like that. The thing that would concern me is condition of the gun, he obviously isn't an honest lister.

Thank you guys for all of the info. Im leaning away from it after reading some of the comments and especially with me not knowing much about rifles to begin with. I think im going to hold out for a shotgun or pistol.
Thank you guys again for all of your input and time responding to this!
