Best CAR for the twisties?

I like Scooby's, but... They just dont handle. Proven, like the sun coming up in the east. The problem is the MacPherson struts. They do well on dirt but do not have the camber control in roll to provide good handling (read: cornering G forces are limited). Now, I know someone is going to post some video of a subaru that handles, and maybe okay. But how much does it take to get an STI over 1.05 G? You can buy a couple cars on this discussion for what it would cost you additionally to get the subaru there. Still like them.

Lotus Elise on a budget:
It's a '72 914 with a full turbo'd Subaru WRX drivetrain. It's has the 5 speed from the WRX with the rear output deleted so it's just a transaxle and it uses a MR2 style cable shifter so it shifts like a new car. While the transmission was apart we put in a Quafe LSD diff. It was dynoed with 12lbs of boost at 250hp to the wheels. Best 1/4 was 13.01 with, when slicks were bolted up it exploded a CV joint. If it wasn't for that it'd easily be a 12 second car. Now it's running 16lbs and accelerates with violence, but it's slow compared to the Hawk LOL. The car is right around 2000lbs.

There are a ton of great "wish list" items on here but when I want 4 wheel fun there are a few requirements: RWD (AWD would be nice too), MID-engine and something I can afford to own and maintain. My little '92 MR2 Turbo is a blast to run through the canyons here in AZ. T-tops out (80's hair band music optional) and let that thing rip. Just make sure to keep good rubber all the way around and learn the habits of a mid engine (don't hit the brakes in a hard corner). May not be the fastest, sweetest looking or most valuable ride on the list but I can afford to keep it up and not too many others will stay with it on a very tight run.

I happened across this video, and you have to hear the engine. They sound...well, you be the judge.

The Porsche 914's 4 cylinder engine was a VW. In Europe the 914 was sold and labeled as a VW.
But they also sold the 914/6 in the US. It had a Porsche 911 engine, and it hauled ***. Very rare.
That Subaru engine must work great, with the liquid cooling. And I imagine it has hydraulic lifters, or buckets with shims...adjusting valves on a 914/6 wouldn't have been fun.

I'm a big fan of sleepers... like this local Miata. It looks like it'd be fun out on White Spar Rd.

while the 'go-cart' cars are great fun, to me they are best for track days. They are generall pretty tortuous for real world use. So are you looking for strictly, sunny day, take out soley to drive twisties for a couple hours then garage?
Or are you hoping to find something that gives great feedback, you can really wring it out and come at least near what it can do, but could also drive it around a bit? That opens up a lot more cool options including older 911 (still hard to beat for feedback and reasonable daily drivers), boxsters can be found very cheap and handle about as well as anything. Miatas are also good starting points. All have a pretty good power to handling balance that you can actually feel like you are working the thing. I think, similar to bikes, a big engine is great, but a lot of the 'thrill' of riding/driving comes from feeling like you can approach a vehicles limits - possibly why we still keep our SH's. GTR's and the like are great but you never come within range of their potential - its a bit like being a spectator.

In 1977 the XB finished position 1 and 2 in the Bathurst 1000 race, For those that don't know, the bathurst 1000 is a 1000 kilometre (620 mile) touring car race held at Bathurst Australia, the race takes around 7 hours to complete & has some nice "twisties". Buy the way the race is on this week-end.
