Anyone use a GoPro Camera?

I want to get a decent camera to use at the track this year, seems like the GoPro is the best option out there, just wanted to get other peoples feedback on them, if the like them or not, how the quality is.

They sell the 1080pHD version for $299, and a cheaper $179 version that only does 960p, and lacks a few other options.

I found this kit on ebay that includes a nice padded waterproof case for everything and a 16gb memory card for $329, seems like the best deal I can find for new, and still comes with manufacturers warranty.

I have an older non HD GoPro. I actually like the Contour one better and not just because I sell them. Here's their homepage Cameras -- Contour Online Store. The Contour does not really require the plastic case unless you plan on hitting a lot of water or mud.The GoPro has to be in the plastic case to work with all their mounts. The controls of the GoPro are not very user freindly. I've got lots of still shots and footage of things I didn't want. So many different modes and setups it's easy to get it wrong with a gloved hand and only one button for everything. The display is on the same side as the lens so you have to be in front of it to tell if it's working correctly or not. Not too convenient when your mounted. Probably the most maddening aspect of the GoPro is the sound. It records just fine, but the plastic case makes a horrible high pitched crackling noise as it vibrates against the camera body. I've talked to lots of people who have spent hours fiddling with it trying to eliminate the noise to no avail. The Contour records beautiful 1080p with sound and is so easy to control: slide it one way and your recording, slide it back and it stops. And the mic is open so there are no unwanted vibrations being picked up. GoPro is the top seller and it's a quality product so you'll be fine if you get one. Once you get it figured out it's not so bad. I just prefer the Contour and I can probably get you a good deal on one if your interested. PM me and I can provide a quote.

I just bought the HD this winter.

The GoPro has many options, including a non-waterproof door if you want. The newest option is a LCD that plugs into the back, they call it the BacPac.

The video is gorgeous. You can set it up for stills.

On the current version, there is a one button set up. You choose this setting in the comfort of home, so that when you're on your bike it's simple. All you do is press and hold the power button. It will start recording, and doesn't stop until you secure the power. Very simple with gloves on. This may not have been a setting on the one that JD had.

I got the 1080HD GoPro from Motorcyclegear.com (New Enough's new name), for $259.

Sounds like GoPro did a good job addressing the issues with the older models.

I have been using the standard gopro for years on the racebikes. Only paid like $130 for it back then & recommend it. Here are some races and track time I did.

Thanks for the tips everybody! I got my GoPro package that I linked above from ebay with the $60 SKB waterproof case and 16GB card for $329 shipped. It arrived Thursday and I've almost filled the memory card already

The film quality is awesome, and I'm amazed at how well the camera handles shakes and vibrations..In some shots I can see my passenger seat shaking violently on bumpy roads, and the film stays rock solid.

I've shot a few clips driving my CRX and running my dog pulling me on an off road skateboard, when I get a chance I'll load one up for you to see.

thanks again

So Yesterday I got my first ride in since I got the GoPro! Started with it on top of the tank with the suction mount and extension arm. Looks awesome a little distorted when it shakes bad, I'm going to try without the extension, it looks fine through the windscreen. Then mounted on the right fairing, then the right tail. Most vids are too long to upload and I didn't get time to edit yet.

On my ride I passed two sport bikes, so I turned to follow. When the first rider on GSXR noticed me he picked up the pace, leaving his friend on a 636 in the dust(new rider/bike), so I passed him and chased down the first guy. We rode for a while and I have some nice film from it, then we stopped and met. Guy on GSXR600 goes to the track some, so we'll surely be riding again.

Here's a short one near my house, enjoy. I'll edit and post some more later, I gotta get to work...

Just a note to all gopro users. It is recommended that you run a safety tether to the camera unless you want a video of a smashed camera. I run a line of safety wire.

You have been warned.

Joe - Yea I quickly realized that as well. Yesterday I tied a shoe lace as a tether until I find something better.

Here's another short video, running my Malamute/Shepherd on the NCR(north County Railroad) Trail in New Freedom PA. Riding an off road skateboard that has maybe 8" tires, good fun.
YouTube - NCR Board Cam 2 Long Run.MP4

Both clips I posted were filmed in 1280x960 HD 4:3 ratio

I rode with a few friends yesterday, it got up close to 80 Degrees here! Filmed from some other neat angles and full 1080p HD. It all looks awesome.

Next time I'll be hijacking their bikes to get more footage of what we all want to see....A RED SUPERHAWK!!!!
