Suddenly Starts in nuetral only...
98'... It was running like a champ, Backfired while driving on the freeway and died. It now only will start in nuetral, when I try to put it in gear it dies. I checked the fuses and they look good. The wiring at the kickstand had some grease/oil in and around it. I suspect there is some kind of short. Someone told me there is a switch I need to access to start the bike. Any suggestions to get it in gear?

In Nuetral the "N" light stays on when the kickstand is up or down. When I put it in Gear it dies and the engine light goes on. It seems strange that the switch would go out as i'm riding the bike. Is there an overide? or an easy way to verify that it is the switch is out? or do I have to buy a new switch and replace it and go from there?

I'll have to go and check the Light. The bike is in a parking lot. I am going to clean the connections etc... and check the wiring with a meter. I was told it may be the bank sensor and that it might need to be reset. I just don't know where the bank sensor is located. Any ideas?

But it probably is just the kickstand (sidestand) switch together with your dash light for that switch being burned out. (since your symptoms perfectly describe a malfuctioning kickstand switch)

Now that you mention it, I don't think I saw the amber light come on at all after this happened. I'll have to go check that out. Appreciate the help. I'm gathering the bike will not go into gear at all until i replace the kickstand switch... and possibly the bulb and wiring? No workarounds?

ok... The kickstand light works and goes on and off when the kickstand goes up and down. Disconnected the connector under the seat and shorting the male to male connectors. It would trigger the kickstand light, but the same thing still happens when I try to put the bick in gear (shuts off). Then my battery died (ugh!) I'm charging the battery right now. Help! any other suggestions. Like how to reset the Bank sensors (if there are any?) I need the bike to get to work tomorrow. Anyone?

ok, it sounds like it is in the side stand switch.
Start in neutral with stand down (amber light on?), bike runs. Put it in gear with stand down(amber light on?), it dies. Put it in gear with stand up(amber light on?), it dies. The light should go off if the side stand is up, but the stand may be loose.. and vibrating thereby activating the switch.
The side switch is wired to kill the motor if it is down, and the trans is in gear. clean the switch, it should be located at the pivot point on the side stand. You'll see a bunch of gunk, use brake cleaner and a brush.
and yes it could be the clutch switch if there is one..

Thing is, the light does go off when he puts the sidestand up. So the switch is at least somewhat working. It may be vibrating though as you mentioned.
J_Bud: Does it die immediately?

Yes!!! I took off the kickstand switch and rotated it a couple of times and straightened out the wires. It started. Right now I zip tied it up out of the way. I'm gonna clean it up on the weekend, maybe order a new one all together. $50. Thanks for your help!!!
